Library Lecture Series: Scott Darsney See more about the lecture series and upcoming speakers here. Thursday, March 18, 2010 Scott Darsney on the Aleutian Islands Alaskan Scott Darsney embodies a modern-day renaissance man. His main passions in life for the past 25 years have been as a climber, climbing guide, and photographer. He also is a pilot, medic, filmmaker, and electrical engineer. “I always try to make my passions my line of work,” says Darsney. “It isn’t always easy to do, keeping up with all types of certifications and practice. I often find I have to combine more than one occupation at a time to make it all work. I play hard and I work hard, and I know how to live and love life. I also have an insatiable curiosity about everyone and everything. I can’t stop learning and meeting people, and hope I never lose that child-like wonder about the world. “ Darsney has climbed, traveled, and photographed in over 80 countries, on all seven continents. His images have been published in numerous books and magazines, including Rock and Ice, Climbing, Outside, and National Geographic, and his film credits include Discovery, BBC, and PBS. A small sampling of summits achieved include Denali, Lhotse, and Mt. Everest. “I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for this planet with others and am always looking forward to the next adventure, and perhaps more important, with whom I will be sharing it. It’s also important to me to have an underlying pay-it-forward focus in all endevours. Wealthy developed countries have been sucking the chi out of this planet and other cultures for too long, and we need to volunteer and give back a bit, instead of feeling this constant entitlement. Luckily I have an accountant”, Darsney says, “as figuring out my tax return is hell.” Darsney lives, works, and plays hard out of his home base of Unalaska/Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.
